From the Ground Up

Experience custom builds unlike anything you'll find with traditional brands. I invite you to follow along on the journey of my first van build, which has become my current home, through this raw photo shoot.

To me building a van starts from the ground up. I purchased my Ram Promaster 2500 with a high roof new off the lot. The first image above captures the van in its early stage, with the fans as the initial installation. Looking back at this photo evokes a deep sense of nostalgia for the two years of labor it took to transform this van.

A Look Under the Walls

Moving forward, I embarked on enhancing the van's comfort and functionality by installing sound-absorbing panels, high-quality insulation, a sturdy bed frame, and a luxurious cool gel, memory foam hybrid mattress.

The introduction of natural light was paramount. The two windows, custom installed by myself, not only illuminate the interior but also mark the beginning of my journey in assisting friends with their own van modifications, cutting through their vans' walls with precision and care. Woodworking has become my favorite aspect of these projects. With each new project, my skills sharpen, bringing a sense of accomplishment and joy.

However, the most thrilling moment captured in this photo was undoubtedly installing the windows. Taking a jigsaw to my brand-new Promaster for the first time was both terrifying and exhilarating, a truly rewarding experience that symbolizes the essence of this van build journey.

The Framing

Frame by frame, the build takes shape! I hold immense pride in this project, not just as a build but as my home. Over the past two years, I've dedicated myself to studying more effective and efficient methods of van conversion, aiming for a balance between weight reduction and enhanced sturdiness. This dedication has transformed my Promaster into a reliable home on wheels, proving its solid build through off-roading adventures and a journey of over 40,000 miles together – all without compromising the structural integrity of the model.

Yet, the journey doesn't end here. Despite the success and reliability it has shown, my focus remains on perpetual improvement. The quest for excellence drives me, pushing boundaries even when everything already seems to be at its best. It's this pursuit of perfection that ensures our adventures continue, unfettered by the limits of the road.

Electrical and Plumbing

Take a moment to appreciate the culmination of this project, showcasing the fully equipped van that now serves not only as a home but as a mobile entertainment hub.

Before we delve further, let's highlight the van’s sophisticated water and electrical systems. Equipped with a 40-gallon water tank, complemented by an efficient electrical water pump, both my shower and sink operate seamlessly, ensuring comfort and convenience on the road.

As a dedicated van lifer and avid gamer, I spared no expense on the electrical setup. Boasting 600 ampere-hours (Ah) of battery storage, 650 watts of solar panels, and a 3000-watt inverter, this van is a powerhouse, fully catering to my gaming marathons and Netflix binges without a hitch.

This van isn’t just a means of travel; it's a testament to self-sufficiency and the joy of tailoring technology to fit a lifestyle of adventure and digital connectivity.

Taking Shape

I couldn't resist this countertop. Despite my initial reservations about its weight, its unique appeal was too compelling to pass up. And you know what? I don't regret it for a moment. It has proven to be both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing, transforming my kitchen area into a space that truly feels like home. Remarkably, its presence hasn’t noticeably impacted the van's performance either.

Aesthetics

It turns out, I have a knack for tile work. Beyond the tiles, the kitchen now boasts a finished look with my 2-burner stove and sink fully installed.

A Rousing Finale

Reflecting on the completed van, I harbor a slight regret about the shower floor—yet, I recognize it as a valuable part of the learning process. The addition of the port hole window, however, has been unequivocally positive, infusing the space with a homely feel. It’s an aspect I’ve always cherished, not only for its aesthetic contribution but also for the practicality it offers, allowing for outdoor showers when necessary.

Now, all that remains is to move in and start living the dream.

All Moved In

Ownership of the van and the video rests with me, but I must give credit where it's due for the audio. Please enjoy the video tour and notice the TV at the foot of the bed as well.
